What is MuSulHak™?

MuSulHak™ is a comprehensive Warrior-Scholar "Martial Technique Study" based on Korean classical martial art that fosters highly disciplined, technically proficient, and academically learned martial artists. It includes etiquette, hand and foot striking techniques, standing and ground grappling techniques, arm, leg, and body throwing techniques, weapons techniques, study of classical Korean characters, study of anatomy, study of massage, study of the mind, study of vital-energy, study of the Analects, study of acupuncture, and study of martial history.

How was the art and association founded?

MuSulHak™ began as MuSul in 1985, developed as MuHak in 1993, and was founded as MuSulHak™ together with the authoritative association governing the art World MuSulHak Society™ on 9 August 2003 by Grand Master Terry Glen Raitt, 8th Degree Black Belt, Society Head.

Who can join?

The association accepts individuals, part-time schools providing instruction privately or through sponsored facilities, and full-time schools providing instruction in dedicated commercial facilities. Individuals with certified black belt ranks in Korean based arts such as Hap Ki Do/HabKiDo, Kuk Sool/KukSul, Hwa Rang Do/HwaRangDo, Soo Bahk Do/SuBakDo, Tang Soo Do/DangSuDo, Tae Kwon Do/TaeKweonDo, and instructors of part-time or full-time schools are especially encouraged to join, although the association accepts those with prior experience in any martial art and always welcomes beginners.

Registration

Is there a fee required to register an individual?

An annual Individual Association Membership Fee for an Associate Member (non-black belt) or Regular Member (black belt) membership is required to register and maintain an active Individual Association Membership.

Is there a fee to register a school?

There is no fee to register a school, but each member of the school must have or apply for an active Individual Association Membership.

What is initial black belt rank appointment?

The association does not transfer black belt rank, however, the association may appoint black belt rank appropriate to the arts studied, experience, and certified ranks obtained in other arts at its discretion when a person joins the association.

What is the difference between appointed and certified black belt rank?

All privileges of rank are the same between appointed and certified black belt rank, however, appointed rank differs from certified rank in that a person must thereafter test and be certified at each rank up through the appointed rank before testing for a higher rank. Time standards up through the appointed rank are waived.

How are appointed and certified black belt ranks conferred?

Letters of Appointment confer appointed black belt rank whereas Degree Certificates confer certified black belt rank.

What initial rank is appropriate for non-black belt members with prior martial art experience joining the association?

Initial rank below black belt is appointed by the association at the discretion of the school head when a person with prior martial art experience joins the association. Time standards up through the appointed rank are waived.

Who in the association conducts black belt rank testing?

Only the Grand Master or appointed examiners may conduct black belt rank testing.

Who in the association conducts non-black belt rank testing?

Only the school head of an association school as conferred by a School Certificate may conduct non-black belt rank testing of the school's members.

Who in the association appoints and certifies rank?

Only the Grand Master may appoint or certify rank.

What is the relationship between black belt members and the Grand Master?

All black belt members are considered independent students of the Grand Master and may contact him in-person, by mail, email, or phone regarding the art or association. This direct access is unique and exemplifies the dedication the Grand Master has to the black belt membership.

School

Who can register a School?

Any person accepted as a Regular Member (black belt) may register a School.

Who is the school head of an association school?

The Regular Member (black belt) specified on a School Certificate is the school head of the specified school.

How does the Grand Master interact with member schools?

The Grand Master routinely contacts school heads and individual members to maintain standards, determine needs, resolve problems, and instill a sense of esprit de corps. He conducts lectures, exhibitions, training, and black belt testing at member schools upon request on an availability basis at no cost to host schools other than actual travel, meals, and lodging.
